Paid Union Meeting

ABOUT EVENT

NZEI Te Riu Roa has sent a letter to our board of trustees to let them know that it is holding paid union meetings further to collective bargaining, which began in mid-April 2018 (principals) and early May 2018 (teachers). Teachers are entitled to attend two paid union meetings a year. The meeting date for teachers in Hamilton is Wednesday May 8 from 9.30AM to 11.30AM.

Our children go to school to learn the critical skills and abilities they need to grow up happy and productive in the 21st century. But right now children are missing out. Teachers and principals are being bogged down in administration, and struggle to get support for children with additional learning needs. And to make matters worse, there’s a shortage of teachers, particularly in areas that are expensive to live in.

We can turn this around. We can free teachers to teach and principals to lead, by providing the additional support and staff that schools need. We’ll attract more people to teaching by respecting them and paying them as the professionals they are.

Why we’re having these meetings

These meetings will provide members with an update on how the campaign is progressing and what is happening in negotiations. They will be the time we all make decisions about our next steps in the campaign. They are also an opportunity to show the government that we are serious about this campaign.

Because of this meeting, teachers will not be available for learning until 12.00 NOON.

Therefore, we ask that on this day, children come to school at 12.00 NOON.

If this is not possible, supervision will be provided whilst children watch a movie until their teacher returns.

Yours sincerely,

Pam Quirke
